A Reminder: Remember your Baptism

This Sunday is Baptism of the Lord Sunday. Each year we intentionally remember Jesus' baptism and our own. This day doesn't have the same celebratory feel that Christmas nor Easter has but it is none the less significant.

I often times find my career field to be redundant. Especially when I come to a day like this. I feel like I have said all the things that I have said before. How do I make baptism fresh? Cool? Trendy? How do I make it be the things that everyone is talking about?!?!

There is a quote that is printed on a tattered piece of paper hanging on for dear life from the rugged piece of tape in my office that says, "People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed." This quote is utter brilliance. Because... Baptism of the Lord Sunday... is about remembering. Remembering is the act of wrestling with why our past matters to our now and how it shapes our moving forward.

In baptism, we are reminded who our God is. And if this isn't amazing enough... God invites us in and to be a part in what God is doing in the world.

So on this day, we remember all the wonderful ways in which God has been faithful to us. And we also continue to hear God's call to be a part in this work of shining light in a world so often consumed in darkness.
