This Sunday @ Locust Hill UMC... Pentecost: A Beautiful Chaos

This Sunday is the day of Pentecost. People refer to this day as the birthday of the church. It is the day that the Spirit poured out among the disciples. We are a people who are empowered by the Spirit. As clear as that might seem the Spirit is still very much a mystery. This was a day of beautiful chaos. It says a violent wind came over them and they all began speaking tongues of other languages. And the  people in the crowd from different backgrounds, locations, languages all were experiencing this Spirit through their own language. What is so beautiful about this experience is the recognition that the Spirit doesn't just pour out "one way" or the "same way" but instead pours out in a diversity of expressions. It is chaos. But there is something cosmically beautiful about it all.

We all like calm waters but the Spirit calls us into this beautiful chaos. I often times hear if we could ALL worship the SAME. This is antithetical the Pentecost narrative. Because what we learn on Pentecost is that God pours out on us in a myriad of ways. We all have different ways of worshiping, differing gifts, differing ways of furthering the mission of Jesus Christ. Often times we chastise and judge how the Spirit pours out upon others. The beautiful reality we are called in to on Pentecost is that the Spirit  is pouring out on us in ways in beautiful yet differing expressions. It leaves us with the ability to recognize and appreciate how the Spirit is being poured out all around us.

Looking forward to diving deep into Pentecost this Sunday!
